Happy Friday!
What a great week!
There’s such a feeling of optimism in the air!
As a fellow alumna, congratulations to Chloe Zhao for winning the Oscar this year. Brava. Nomadland.
I’m also proud to be associated with New York University and so many talented people! It’s very exciting!
There’s a lot to be gained by celebrating other creator’s successes. A great exercise is to write about what you want as if you already have it.
1.Set a timer for 5 minutes.
2.Start by imagining that you have won an award. Feel what that would feel like.
3.Write an old-fashioned acceptance speech, in which you thank all of the people who helped you followed by a short paragraph describing the project and your role as writer, director, and/or producer.
Creating a happy story about yourself will add energy to whatever you’re working on, and it’s a technique you can use to also develop characters. There are many awards and if you’re writing about someone who’s in a profession, having the character accept an award can give you great insight and often provides unexpected plot twists.
Enjoy feeling good!
There are a few places available in my upcoming rewrite class.
