Last Friday past I danced a tango in honor of my Mother. I began to study tango four years ago because it was the only thing that I found that was more difficult than writing. I got the idea to dance for my mother when a fortune cookie I ate right after she died read: “Channel your excess energy into rejuvenation”. Rather than sitting around crying and getting fat, I decided to rejuvenate myself; and that to me meant dancing. Also, in the weeks before my mother died, we often sat together and listened to tango music which she loved. This seemed to be a nice way to have closure.
The song I dance to in this video is the song that was actually playing when she died.
I always tell writers that you only have two choices in life: you can struggle or dance, and this is a case where the choice to dance really paid off. I hope you enjoy it.
